The controversial work of the Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn shows that artworks can still trigger heated debates. But how political is art? What effects does art have on us and which concepts of reality and artificiality, of politics and culture form our mind?
The planning and realisation of Hirschhorns project "Gramsci Monument", a hommage to the Italian philospher Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937), is the center point of Angelo Alfredo Lüdin's documentary. The film follows the artist's work through all its different stages. The director observes how Hirschhorn involves a group of Bronx residents in the conception and the realisation of the "Gramsci Monument". A lot of these people live in projects, in an economically tenous environment, far away from New York's Museum Mile and the centers of sophisticated culture. The film focuses on the interactions between the art work, the people and the neighbourhood, exploring the impact that art can have in an urban, rather poor area like the South Bronx.
