Sabine Hertig (1982*) strikes a direct approach to information media. Hertigs skill lies in the combination of diverse print media which she merges till the extent of full immersion. She visualizes todayÂ’s vast, yet ephemeral collective visual memory - she even manages to fathom the chaos of the internet. At the same time, she tries to renew the very concept of painting. At distance, the visual structure of her work creates the impression of a painting, which gradually dissolves into subtle mosaic of scraps when viewed up close: ItÂ’s a playful discourse on the boundaries between visibility and the realm of things invisible.
The film provides an insight into the work of Sabine Hertig at the Dreispitz area in Basel. During a whole year, we witnessed the creation of a black and white, monumental collage triptychon. Photographs found in high brow magazines were ruthlessly cut up and pictures once hidden behind book covers now collide and intertwine, and finally become part of a grandious composition. «Potentially, any print material can be equally used in the creation of an image», says Hertig, «What I do is nothing else but painting - but with scraps.» We observe the artist as she struggles her way through the pervasive collages. We experience how scraps grow into structure on canvas and we ask ourselves: How much order and how much chaos can an image bear in itself?
With SCRAP, Sabine Hertig expands the idea of collage. SCRAP implies more than just something thrown out. SCRAP radically includes parting with rules and principles, too. Under HertigÂ’s hands collage goes beyond using an artistic tool. It becomes a broken and yet impeccable mirror of a world that has become a montage in itself.
Sabine Hertig graduated at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel. The artist is represented through the leading Swiss gallery STAMPA. In 2013, Hertig was awarded with the Riehen Art Reward of the City Council. More about the artist:
